The paladin Collaboration is an emergency resPONSE
to fight the COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN AFRICA
Background and Need
We are one of several local teams that have recognized the severe challenges faced by South Africa, and the world regarding shortages of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the United States Department of Human and Health Services, the COVID-19 pandemic will require an estimated 3.5 billion masks over the next year. (buzzfeednews.com).
As a dedicated work team, we decided to pursue the protection of our essential health care workers, by developing and customizing full face snorkelling masks as ventilators, supplemental O2 respirators and PPE.
This crisis is currently being experienced on a global scale with 1 million people affected by the virus as, of 2nd April 2020. Nationally, there has been exponential growth of COVID- 19 across all regions. At current production levels, conventional mask production is very likely to fall short with significant associated costs (paywall warning) against the America’s purchasing power.
The idea initially came to light from the various Spanish and Italian engineers who developed snorkelling masks as ventilators, making use of the design and it’s positive pressure effects for the patient. The airtight seal was later explored by Italian engineers as an effective PPE mask for health care workers.
This project is open-source in nature, with solutions developed for use worldwide.
This project is open to community involvement and contributions from relevant stakeholders in the health care industry.
This project is based on models of masks and technology that is available locally.
This project uses basic components with a safe design.
Supplies and materials will be locally sourced where available.
The design(s) will be verified, validation thereof will be documented and transparency will be ensured.
Support the fight against COVID-19
If you would like to help the people who are working hard to care for those affected by COVID-19, please consider donating to a reputable organization in your community. We encourage all individuals to please consider and think of the elderly or differently abled neighbours who may need support or assistance.
We are still getting organized. Please be patient.
